The verb estar connotes temporary characteristics, or those which are the results of an actino:
the food is cold La comida esta fría
the coffee is too sweet El café está demasiado dulce
* it is used with the location of persons or things
I am in Cádiz Estoy en Cádiz
The city is far away La ciudad está lejos
* it is used to indicate mood
They are happy Están contentos/as
She/he is sad Está triste
