A small number of phrases consisting of ´to be + adjective´ in English, are expressed in Spanish by ´to have´ (tener) + noun (se also estar).
to be hungry to be thirsty to be afraid tener hambre(lit: to have hunger)
tener sed (lit: to have thirst)
tener miedo (lit: to have feat)
to be right (correct) tener razón (lit: to have reason)

The verb ´to be´ has two forms in Spanish, ser and estar. To know exactly when to use which verb takes practice but here are some basic rules to help you.

The verb ser is used in situations that have a degree of permanence about them:
* Characteristics of persons or things

* Occupations and nationality

* telling the time and location of evens
